Big Bartij was the large male hedgehog Bellringer, Gardener, and Infirmary assistant of Redwall Abbey during the time of Abbess Marjoram. He was said to be gentle, and didn't like killing unless he had to. Bartij, along with Buckler Kordyne, Jango Bigboat, Sniffy, and Skipper Ruark Boldstream, was part of a search party sent to find the missing Dibbuns.
He and Jango tracked two prison guards who escaped Althier with Thwip and Binta. Bartij killed one of the four Ravagers who, while lead by Zwilt the Shade ambushed the search party. Bartij helped defend Redwall during the battle against Zwilt the Shade and the Ravagers.
