Cartwill was a young recruit in the Long Patrol. He was sent with Brigadier Buckworthy Crumshaw to chase down Gulo the Savage and his horde. He and Folderon were often annoyed with the goshawk Tergen's lectures about having "eyes like a hawk". Cartwill assisted Derron Fortindom in taking down the fox scout Graddu.
