This category lists all of the hares in the Redwall series. The characters take their inspiration from World War II bomber pilots.
Hares are generally known for being fun-loving, very talkative, sometimes slightly obnoxious, and mostly having very long names. Their vast appetites are legendary. In spite of their apparent casual attitude however, most hares are very dangerous and courageous fighters and can be extremely dependable in battle. For this reason, they are often chosen by Badger Lords to form their elite army, the Long Patrol. Hares tend to reside at Salamandastron, Redwall Abbey, or the Northlands. Every published Redwall book mentions hares.
"There are always hares. And the hares are vivid outstanding characters. You know, they stick out above all the rest because of their curious accents, their greed for food, but also their loyalty and their fighting qualities and that's what makes them endearing to lots of people. Lots of people say, 'I love the hares, y'know, because the hares, they're never mundane, they never do what you expect them to.' And they have that sort of innate British upper-class accent that we associate with old colleges, sort of WWII fighting pilots, that sort of thing, the military. Y'know, that's why I like working with them." - Brian Jacques, Terrouge, November 2002
