Friar Alder was a thin, lanky mouse in charge of the Kitchen at Redwall Abbey. He was anxious about Abbot Bernard's Midsummer Jubilee Feast, but he concocted his massive masterpiece, "Bernard Bread" in time for the celebration. Within the wheat-and-oat loaf was leeks, sage, rosemary, bay, turnip, beetroot, onions, six varieties of mushroom, cabbage, fennel, cucumber, and corn, with mildpepper and cream gravy. Alder was also very attached to his vegetable chopping knives.
He later focused on training former Trag warriors in the culinary arts. Friar Alder was succeeded by Friar Cockleburr.
