Gristletail was a male sea rat who fell overboard off of his ship. After receiving mockery from his crew, he abandoned them in the Mossflower Woods area, where he encountered Rootsworth Rushstalk. Rootsworth referred Gristletail to Ashfoot Spearshaft and his otter crew, with whom he could seek a reformed way of living.
