The Horse was a beast used by Cluny the Scourge to pull the cart transporting his horde. It entered Mossflower Woods at an extremely fast pace, spurred by its fear of the vermin. On the way to Redwall Abbey, the horse stopped out of total exhaustion, which angered Cluny.
When Skullface, on Cluny's orders, reluctantly jumped on the horse to bite it in order to make it move again at a faster pace, the horse became so frightened that it started running without waiting for Skullface to act. Its speed caused Skullface to fall off of its back and get crushed under the wheels of the cart. The horse later escaped when the cart crashed; its fate is unknown.
Why is there only one horse?[]
In Redwall.org's "Ask Brian Volume 4," Brian Jacques stated that as Redwall was his first novel, he didn't expect it to be published. As such, he included many elements that were later removed, e.g. the horse, Beaver, dogs, pigs, etc.
Trivia[]
