The Juska were tribes of vermin that lived near the western shores of Mossflower Woods. They were nomadic and fierce warriors, and often at war with each other. The legend of the Taggerung, a vermin warrior who would lead his clan to power and glory, was common amongst the Juska. Each Juska tribe (sometimes called a clan) was ruled by a chief, typically the tribe's most fearsome and dangerous member.
Culture[]
Juska tribe names were formed from the root Juska and a suffix derived from the chieftain's surname. For example, the Juska tribe led by Ruggan Bor took the name Juskabor. Tribe names were not permanent; they changed according to a tribe's chieftain, who could be challenged by any clan member who thought himself superior.
Clans varied in number from a few dozen to hundreds. Some vermin were born into the clan, while others willingly joined or were forced into membership. A clan could grow in strength by conquering and annexing other clans, and by building a reputation that attracted new vermin to its ranks.
Like many vermin, the Juska tribes were highly superstitious. Each had a fox seer whose role was to predict the future, as well as a symbol, in the form of a facial tattoo, to denote its members. When one clan was absorbed into another, following war or conquest, the new members sported the colors of both clans on their faces.
The Juska tribes' primary occupation was raiding and pillaging. Being little more than dry land pirates, they preyed on any beast or settlement that they deemed weaker. Between raids, they subsisted by hunting or gathering.
