Log-a-Log is the title given to the shrew leaders of the Guosim, Guoraf, and Guosssom, as well as the Northwest Shrew Tribe. The Guosssom Log-a-Log holds the Blackstone as a mark of their title. Sometimes, they continue to use their given names, sometimes not. All Log-a-Logs and shrew leaders have been male, with the exception of Grenn, the first known Log-a-Log, who appears in Lord Brocktree, and Guosim, who appears in Redwall.
"Log-a-Log" is generally a hereditary title, passed down throughout the generations (e.g. Osbil succeeding Luglug). However, inheritors of the title can choose to abdicate the role (e.g. Garul). Guosim law also dictates that if a Log-a-Log is killed, the tribe member who avenges that death can become the new Log-a-Log (e.g. Dippler).
Historically, a family of shrews living on the Great South Stream operated a ferry and assisted travelers in crossing the river aboard a floating tree trunk, or log. Shouting "Logalogalogalogalog" was the method of attracting the ferry shrew's attention. Over the seasons, this booming beckoning evolved into the tribal leader's official title.
