Rekaby was a peace-loving, aging male squirrel, and the leader of the Fortunate Freepaws. He had completely silver fur, which made him rather noticable from a distance; he also loved to learn long, complicated words, using them at every opportunity.
When Posybud and Uggo Wiltud escaped from Razzid Wearat and the crew of the Greenshroud, they met up with the Fortunate Freepaws, who were wandering in the area. Rekaby and a few others led the pair of hedgehogs away from the shorelines and into a marsh; there, Rekaby convinced Sircolo to aid them in their flight from Razzid. After Sircolo led them through the marsh, Rekaby left the hedgehogs with the Guosim tribe of Log-a-Log Dandy Clogs, and went back to join the rest of the Freepaws; he took Dandy's vermin captive Voogal with him, claiming that he would try to teach the ferret how to behave.
After Razzid slaughtered several Guosim shrews, Rekaby and the whole band of Freepaws returned, and helped to heal the wounded left from the battle. Later, at Rekaby's suggestion, the Freepaws and the Guosim they had healed accompanied Jum Gurdy to Redwall Abbey, where they arrived just in time to witness the defeat of Razzid and his crew.
