"Most reptiles in Redwall are neutral". Does that include hostile tribes of toads and flesh-eating lizards? Tahnok84 18:56, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm gonna say that killing everyone in your path, regardless of allegiance, doesn't make you neutral. Black Hawk Argulor Talk! 21:25, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I agree. I don't see any of the reptiles in the Redwall series as neutral. Charie Swordmaid Tapestryrgn Talk! 21:29, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

"He indiscriminately ate whoever was in his path, even if it was one of Cluny's crew. He couldn't be good, or else no Redwaller would be eaten, and he isn't a baddie, as I'm sure he would eat Cluny the Scourge and King Bull Sparra if he had the chance."

Well, just because you oppose another enemy doesn't make you good. Captain Clogg opposed Badrang in Martin the Warrior, but was still evil. Evilness is determined by one's character and actions, not one's affiliation. And Asmodeus was certainly not a saint.

"He was only killed because he was an obstacle in the path to success."

If it was in their power, the shrews and Redwallers would have tried to kill Asmodeus, since he was such a great menace. The only reason why they didn't kill him was because he was too powerful for them to defeat. Matthias wouldn't have killed him if he was neutral. Since Asmodeus was evil, it was morally justifiable to slay him. So the reasons why Matthias slew the serpent were: (1)because he was an obstacle to success and (2)he was truly evil. I think that if Asmodeus hadn't been so possesive of the things he took he would still be alive, because he was going after Matthias because he took the sword back. But I think Asmodeus was evil in a way because he very well could have only eaten baddies or just plants, not everything or anything that moved.--Driftstream 20:39, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Cool Essay[]

I like this essay you wrote defending one of my all-time favorite characters, in not just Redwall but fiction in general. Even if it has flaws (most notably the fact that Brian himself, I believe, stated in some interview or Q&A that Asmodeus is evil), it was still fun to read. So thanks for sharing!
