Seeing as I recently made a post about cross-book characters, and just yesterday noted the ambiguous mention of a "Mariel of Redwall" character in it's sequel, "The Bellmaker", I tnought I'd bring up something I found put recently.

I knew there were quite a few characters in Redwall who share the same name---the most famous case being the two Ripfangs (who, despite what Mr. Jacques says, are often considered the same character), and the two Martins (eventually revealed to be three). There's also the Foremoles, Log-a-Logs and Skippers, of course, but those are just titles; one positive element of the series as it progressed was that Mr. Jacques stopped calling them exclusively by those titles.

However, there are apparently also no fewer than 39 names that have been recycled over the course of the series. I found this list on TV Tropes, so it may not be completely accurate, but it's one of the only ones (if not the only) I've seen compiled, and definitely the most elaborate. The names are: Ash, Badtooth, Barfle, Billum, Bladetail, Blodge, Blowfly, Brugg, Buckler, Bungo, Catkin, Drigg, Drull, Flibber, Frang, Frink, Grumby, Gruzzle, Gurdle, Heartwood, John, Joseph, Lugg, Petunia (3 times over!), Plugg, Rogg, Rooter, Rose (again, three times over---I bet you can guess which one is the most well-known!), Ruggan, Rungle, Scratch, Serena, Shorebuck, Stinky, Thrugg, Trey, Trimp, Urthclaw, Urthrun, and also the mention of the name Willyum in two books, as I brought up earlier, but since one is in a song and in a sequel to the book with the "first" character with that name, it's unclear whether it's mentioning a real character, and if it is, whether or not it's a seperate one.

I guess this isn't really surprising, as the series has hundreds, if not thousands of characters, and there are only so many names that Mr. Jacques can think up. I'd be very interested to know how many recycled names we'd be on at this point if the books were still being written. Most of these characters listed are minor ones, and the few major ones (such as Rose) are ones with more common names, so I doubt we'd ever get another Ironbeak or Asmodeus (which I'd be fine with, since those particular characters are already incredibly special to me). However, it's still cool to look at all these recycled names, and see which characters with them stand out more.
