Recently, an artist who worked on Patrick McHale's vision for the Netflix Redwall movie shared some concept artwork that he created during his brief time on the project. Bert Youn, who has worked on Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall, We Bare Bears, and Amphibia, was a storyboard artist for this adaptation of Brian Jacques' Redwall for a few months in 2021.
With the caption "Some drawings from a feature film that never got made", Youn shared 34 pieces of art, which you can see below.
The scenes clearly depict Matthias and Methuselah descending the stairs beneath Redwall Abbey, discovering the tomb of Martin the Warrior, entering it, and locating Martin's shield, a sequence of events that unfolds in Chapter 6 of Book Two, The Quest.
It is very, very important to bear in mind that despite that caption, despite the departures of McHale and Youn from this project, AND despite no news from Netflix regarding its present status and future, that does not mean it is canceled. Netflix has never announced the cancellation or abandonment of this film. The Redwall Wiki continues to have faith in a Netflix Redwall movie happening, and greatly looks forward to seeing it come into fruition. You should too.
For a fun comparison, here's how the Nelvana Redwall TV Series' episode three of Season 1, Treachery, handled the same chapter. Notably, Nelvana added Cornflower Fieldmouse and altered the riddle and method of entry to the tomb.
What do you think of Youn's concept art? Sound off in the comments!
