It's been approximately a year and a half since any details about the Netflix Redwall film project have surfaced, and we know fans are champing at the bit for more information. The good news: we have an exclusive update from Patrick McHale, the screenwriter!

"I finished a script," McHale told the Redwall Wiki. "And we did some beautiful development art and some storyboards."

However, he observed that the filmmaking process can take time, noting "it may be an extra while before [fans] get Redwall content."

"The current folks over at Netflix have a great understanding (and love) of the property, and want to make something good," McHale said. "And I think we set a nice groundwork for whatever is to come."

Worth noting, back in July, Netflix acquired Animal Logic animation studios - the company responsible for movies like Happy Feet, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, The LEGO Movies, as well as Peter Rabbit and Peter Rabbit 2 (both of which were produced by Emma Topping, the executive producer attached to the Redwall film). Seemingly, a firm like this would be a fantastic fit for a Redwall production, if that route is selected.

The 40th anniversary of the publication of Redwall in the UK is approaching in 2026 (and in the U.S. in 2027) - that sure seems like a great time to celebrate with a feature film. Regardless of how long it takes to adapt Brian Jacques' Redwall into a movie, we're excited for the future.

It's just going to require a bit of patience. There's a lot of work that goes into making motion pictures, especially animated ones.

Right now, we're anticipating McHale's latest endeavor, the upcoming stop-motion film Pinnochio, a screenplay collaboration with director Guillermo del Toro that's scheduled to be released on Netflix on December 9, 2022.
