Founded in 1998, the Teaching Awards is an annual ceremony in the UK celebrating excellence in the classroom. Anyone can nominate a school, teacher, teaching assistant, and others to demonstrate dedication to education.
For the 2009 Teaching Awards, there are 417 finalists, of which there will be 146 winners in 12 categories; those winners will progress on to the finals, held in London this coming October.
Starting June 2nd and going until June 23rd, there will be 13 ceremonies celebrating all of the finalists, colloquially known as the "Oscars for teachers".
Brian Jacques will be presenting at the June 18th ceremony in Greater Manchester; there are 34 educators on the shortlist, 12 of which will receive awards.
