The Dutch Redwall Trilogies

I know it's February, but welcome to 2018 on the Redwall Wiki! Our first Redwall Collectors Community of the year will be covering three of the Dutch Redwall Trilogies. Today, we'll be taking a look at De Roodburcht (Redwall), Het Moswoud (Mossflower), and Mariël (Mariel of Redwall). This is the first time every edition has been united together.

The few Redwall novels published in the Netherlands are each split into three separate hardcover books; each book consists of around 16-20 chapters, approximately 160-170 pages, and the same chapter icons from the English language publications.

Like the German Redwall Saga, the - very striking - cover artwork from Herman Tulp, Hans Parlevliet, and Ed Boelaarts is etched onto the physical cover directly. Additional artwork is found on the spine. When all three books in a trilogy are together, like on a shelf, an image is displayed. For De Roodburcht, it's Redwall Abbey. For Het Moswoud, it's the eyes of Tsarmina Greeneyes. And for Mariël, it's the Joseph Bell.

Each book ends with a map and a biography of Brian Jacques, which is where things get interesting. The maps for all three trilogies are different from the original novels. I quite like them a lot. The biography of Brian Jacques in De Roodburcht is different from the other two, which use a common photo. This one, though, uses a photo I've never seen before of the author in his element. Be sure to check it out below!

And one odd difference, chapters 40 and 41 from Book 3 of Mariël are missing entirely.

Additionally, the three novels in De Roodburcht were released on two different occasions. The first set featured cover artwork by Ed Boelaarts. The second set featured Herman Tulp's artwork.

De Roodburcht[]

  • Book 1: De Roodburcht: De Aanval
  • Book 2: De Roodburcht: De Zoektocht
  • Book 3: De Roodburcht: De Krijger

1994 De Roodburcht editions, featuring Boelaarts' artwork.

Later De Roodburcht editions, featuring Tulp's artwork.

All of the De Roodburcht editions at once, as well as the map. The side or "shelf view" is also different in each set of books. The 1994 novels are enumerated "1, 2, 3" and the depiction of Redwall Abbey is slightly different.

Het Moswoud[]

  • Book 1: Het Moswoud: De Koningin van Duizend Ogen
  • Book 2: Het Moswoud: De Weg Naar de Vuurberg
  • Book 3: Het Moswoud: De Afrekening

Mariël[]

  • Book 1: Mariël: Het Verlaten Strand
  • Book 2: Mariël: Het Oneindige Bos
  • Book 3: Mariël: Eiland Aardedood
