In early 2021, Patrick McHale was announced as the screenwriter for Netflix's Redwall film project. By the middle of 2022, he parted ways with the streamer, however he exclusively told the Redwall Wiki that he had completed a script. It should be noted that McHale's departure over two years ago does not mean the end of the project, in-development movies change screenwriters and directors all the time, even at Netflix. Netflix has never publicly stated that this project isn't moving forward.
McHale is perhaps most well-known for his 2014 Cartoon Network animated series Over the Garden Wall. This year is its 10th anniversary, and a new stop-motion short was released earlier today to celebrate.
In an interview with the folks at Inverse about Over the Garden Wall, McHale was asked about his Redwall vision.
"I probably can't tell you many details, but I think it would have been really beautiful!" McHale said. "I was basically trying to make it look and feel like the book covers. It's a shame we didn't get to make it, but I'm really proud of the work we did. I learned a lot too.
It's fun to think about Troy Howell's covers serving as inspiration for McHale. A lot of time has passed since then, though. We continue to remain hopeful and excited for whatever Netflix has planned for the Redwall movie.
