It's here! Today the Redwall Wiki takes a look at the newly published 2022 German edition of Redwall (Der Sturm auf die Abtei), featuring cover artwork by UK illustrator Chris Dunn. Previously, in 2017, we reviewed the 1990s-era German editions of Redwall books.
Published by Cross-Cult, the book is a hardcover, and they're said to be releasing the entirety of Brian Jacques' Redwall series, all 22 books, with new cover artwork from Dunn. Shipment from Germany to the U.S. was about a 13-day process, which included departure, clearance through customs, and arrival at Redwall Wiki HQ.
Let's take a look.
Like other European editions, there is no dust jacket. Dunn's cover artwork, which showcases Matthias battling Cluny the Scourge at Redwall Abbey, is emblazoned directly onto the cover itself. And, as you can see, it is a sizable book.
The interior contains no new illustrations - they're the exact same UK/U.S. illustrations and map by Gary Chalk from the original published Redwall novel. This is a differentiator from the 1990s German editions, which featured their own unique interior illustrations.
The back cover features a summary of the novel, as well as Chalk's illustration of the Redwall Tapestry.
English translation
Welcome to Mossflower, where the gentle mice have gathered to celebrate a year of peace and plenty. All is well... until a dark shadow falls over the ancient abbey of Redwall. Rumor has it that Cluny, the terrible one-eyed rat, is coming with his savage horde to conquer Redwall! The only hope for the besieged mice lies in the lost sword of the legendary warrior Martin. And so begins the epic quest of a bumbling young apprentice - a brave mouse who rises to strike back... and become a legend himself.
The spine contains an icon of what looks like Cluny, as well a number at the bottom, which will certainly look nice on a shelf when all of these Cross-Cult editions are published.
Overall, fairly simple. We're looking forward to grabbing all 22 of these - we like complete hardcover sets, and can't wait to see more of Dunn's artwork. For fun, we've included a photo of both German editions of Redwall below.
