Welcome to the newest entry in our Redwall voice actor series!
Canadian voice actor Catherine Disher is probably best known to millennials as the voice of Jean Grey in the 1990s X-Men animated series. She's contributed to numerous TV shows and video games over the years, and has also appeared in several live action television shows, series, and movies, including T. and T., Traders, Snakes & Ladders, The Border, Forever Knight, and The Good Witch.
For Redwall viewers, Disher was the voice of Mrs. Churchmouse, Winifred, and various Sparra in Season 2 of the Nelvana Redwall TV Series, the adaptation of Mattimeo.
We asked Disher for her recollections of Redwall during her time as a cast member; she described it to us as "extraordinary in many ways", "a classic" and "a special show".
Of interest, Disher was familiar with Brian Jacques' Redwall books prior to being cast and had even read a few of them with her son.
She had high praise for the other voice actors, especially Richard Binsley (Basil Stag Hare) and the late Janet Wright (Constance).
Disher also helped clear up a little mystery we had been wondering about - Tim Curry (Slagar the Cruel) didn't record with the cast in Toronto, instead he recorded remotely from Los Angeles. While responding to our questions, Disher graciously reached out to her friend, Redwall voice director Jessie Thomson, for additional memories and insights, and learned a very amusing story about Thomson's interactions with Mr. Curry.
To hear Disher's lovely memories of the show, her advice for those who seek to become voice actors, and that funny story about Curry, watch the video below now.
Thank you so much for sharing, Catherine!
