Redwall Wiki Celebrates 18 Years

Can you believe it? The Redwall Wiki has officially been online for 18 years!

The big picture: We've been providing Redwall news and information to Brian Jacques fans for the length of time it takes an adolescent to enter into adulthood.

What happened this past year: We brought you interviews with former Philomel Vice President Patti Lee Gauch and Redwall's first cover artist, Pete Lyon, and highlighted the artwork of Gary Chalk.

Plus: We provided reviews of the brand new German, Hungarian, and Polish editions of Redwall and revealed new cover artwork for several foreign editions.

Not to mention: We were the only media outlet to report that Patrick McHale completed the script for the Netflix Redwall film project.

Speaking of that...

Netflix Redwall Film Project[]

Every couple of months, someone asks "What's going on with the Netflix Redwall movie?"

Here is everything you need to know as of 2023.

  • We are the definitive resource on everything Redwall. If you want to know what's going on with the project, bookmark this page, and check it from time to time! If there's anything relevant to the Redwall film, it will be there. (And regularly check our main page for ALL Redwall news and features!) As we discussed above, the most recent update is that the screenplay was finished by the screenwriter.
  • Netflix is known for making movie and TV project announcements and then going silent for quite some time. For example, Netflix announced a new Narnia movie in 2018. There was no news until this year - that's five years of waiting for an update. It was never canceled during that time and there were no headlines.
    • Patrick McHale was announced as the screenwriter for Pinnochio in 2017; the animated movie was released in 2022. Another five year window.
    • Netflix announced an animated movie called The Monkey King in 2018. There were absolutely NO UPDATES until (guess when?) one month before its release, when a trailer was dropped. Five years again? Yep.
    • Netflix announced an animated series called Mulligan in 2020. There was zero news on this project for three years, when exactly one month before its release, details were provided to the public. Is anyone sensing a trend yet?
  • Patrick McHale WON AN OSCAR for his Pinnochio screenplay this year. This was the first Oscar for Netflix. (If you haven't seen this movie yet, you really should!)
  • Netflix bought amazing Australian animation studio Animal Logic last year. This could certainly be unrelated to Redwall, but it provides food for thought, especially considering one of the Redwall project's executive producers also produced Animal Logic movies.

It might be helpful to think about the situation this way:

"Netflix's Oscar-winning animation department is probably working on adapting Redwall, featuring a screenplay written by its Oscar-winning screenwriter, especially considering its purchase of an incredible animation studio and in light of WGA/SAG strikes that do not involve the Animation Guild."

We still anticipate a Netflix Redwall movie with great excitement. As we've observed before: It's going to take some time, patience is key here. Great films aren't animated, developed, cast, and produced overnight.

Thanks for celebrating our anniversary with us - as always, we have more features on the way!
