Wolfbane was an herb native to the Mossflower Woods region. Stored by Brother Farrow at Redwall Abbey, Veil Sixclaw used it to poison an oat-and-barley water, intending to murder Friar Bunfold for twisting his ear. However, Myrtle unknowingly drank the deadly beverage instead.
Badrang the Tyrant used this herb when he tried to poison Cap'n Tramun Clogg, but the plan failed.

Two herbs may have inspired this plant:
- Wolfsbane, a flowering purple plant. If applied to the skin or eaten, it can prove to be fatal.
- Wolf's bane, a type of tobacco often used for muscle treatment.
